Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral?
A referral is not necessary to see an Exercise Physiologist. However, you may be entitled to a medicare rebate on up to 5 sessions per year if you have a chronic disease management plan referral for Exercise Physiology from your GP.
What is an Exercise Physiologist?
An exercise physiologist is a university degree qualified professional who specialises in clinical exercise interventions for people with various health issues. In addition to their training in exercise testing, programming and prescription, they have also studied anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, neuroscience, biomechanics of human movement, pharmacology, pyschology, nutrition and the interaction and implications of exercise with a range of health conditions. They are therefore uniquely placed to provide expert exercise guidance to those with complex medical conditions.
Are Exercise Physiologists regulated?
Yes, the Exercise Physiology industry is regulated by Exercise Sports Science Australia (ESSA). In order to be accredited each year, strict standards must be met, including but not limited to a requirement for continuous professional education and the holding of appropriate insurances. To verify whether an exercise physiologist is accredited you can check the ESSA website https://essa.org.au/Web/Web/Verify-accreditation.aspx?hkey=639eb9a5-cc72-419e-a3b5-68a85e0e1a9c
Can I use my private health insurance?
Some private health funds provide a rebate on exercise physiology services. This can be claimed at the time of the appointment. If you wish to check with your insurer as to your entitlements, the relevant item codes are 102 for an initial exercise physiology consult and 202 for an individual follow-up appointment.
Are you registered to provide services under department of veterans affairs (DVA) or workers compensation (SIRA)?
Yes. Please note that these appointments may incur a fee that is different to the private fee, but will be provided at no out-of-pocket cost to you.
I am currently undergoing cancer treatment. Should I wait until this is finished and I have more energy before I see you?
No need to wait! There is strong evidence for the benefits of exercise in reducing the side-effects and increasing the body’s tolerance to cancer treatments. We are experts in designing a program that can be managed around the fluctuations of your treatment cycle. Our clinic is a safe and hygienic environment to exercise. If your immune system is particularly compromised, our practitioner is happy to wear a mask for your added protection.
How do I get there? Is there any parking?
Visitor and disabled parking is available underneath the building. Please note that these clearly labelled spots are limited and shared by others within the complex. Please do not park in a spot that is not marked for visitors, or in a disabled spot if you do not have the required permit. Street parking or undercover parking at the nearby Westfield Warringah Mall is also available. If you are unable to walk very far and require a guaranteed spot underneath the building, please inform us prior to your appointment so that we can best assist you. The clinic is within The Health Studio Brookvale, which is located on the ground floor and has an accessible ramp from street level.
If using public transport, please alight at Warringah Mall.
What should I wear?
Please come dressed in clothing that is comfortable to move in.
